The main codes and conventions of posters when making a film is the media language and the camera. When it comes to media language on the poster you need to make sure that you have all the important information. First of all you need to have who is staring within the film, this isnt always in the biggest font as it isnt the most important piece of information. Although having who is staring in the film can attract an audience as these people may only want to see the film due to who is staring in it. The biggest piece of information on the poster is normally the title due to the creator of the poster wanting to grab an audiences attention and for them to remember the film and for them to then go and see it. Usually on posters they also have quotes of what the audience have said about the film. This is normally bolded and in a different colour so it attracts the audience to the good things being said about the film. A lot of important words within the posters are normally bolded and put in a different colour so it draws your eye towards them. Next with the camera work all depending on what sort of film it is the poster will always create an atmosphere. I am looking at 2 buddy comedies here and as you can see the poster contains a central image of the 2 buddies together. The main characters will always be the ones that are in focus.
The main codes and conventions of movie trailers are media language, camera and editing and sound. First of all when it comes to media language within a movie trailer you always see things such as the creators of the films logo, the age certificate, you always see the name of the film and again you could possible come across quotes from the audience. Next the camera and editing is the most important code and convention due to it helping build the right atmosphere throughout. The camera work that is often used throughout a film can vary from things such as close ups, long shots, establishing shots, crab shots etc. The editing then within a trailer is basically where they use a small section of a clip within the film and then crop it so that not too much of the film is given away to the audience. Next the sound is also important. Within a trailer you will get a lot of voice overs where someone is speaking a little bit about the film. You will also hear some non-digetic music and this will also help build the right atmosphere throughout.
Another thing that is important with both of these is the mise-en-scene. The characters within the film need to fit right in when it comes to making a film therefore when it comes to shooting for the poster and trailer they need to make sure they look as though they fit in. This means that both the costumes and props are going to have to be right. In 22 Jump Street as we can see that it is both a violent but also an action film that is set in the summer. Therefore everyone is dressed in bright summer clothes that you would wear in the summer. Shorts, sleeveless tops, bright colours, sunglasses, bikinis etc. The props that are also being used are things such as guns which helps give us that idea there is going to be some action within the film. With Ted we can see that the man is wearing a suit and sitting having a beer and a laugh with his friend the teddy bear. This then gives off the idea that he is a very laid back business man and doesn't really care. When we look further into the trailers the props and costume help a lot more. in 22 Jump Street they have to try and fit in to be university students therefore they need to dress like one and act like one due to using props like things such as books, pens, pencils. Other props that are used is alcohol and weapons which then tells us little things such as there age range and what the film is going to revolve around. Then when we look into Ted's trailer we see that the main is a very laid back business man but can also be a slob due to the state of his house and the things he wears when he isnt working. The girls within the film are also dressed in a very provocative way which is seen as sex appeal which then gives off another thought of what the film is about. Again alcohol is another prop that is used within this. Therefore I think that props and costumes are very important due to a poster giving off one idea what a film is about but then when you look into a trailer you begin to see a lot more and learn exactly what the film is about especially due to the help of props and costume. This basically means that sometimes when looking at a poster you could get the wrong idea of what a film is about as apposed to when you watch the trailer.
All these products the trailer, dvd cover, and poster all link together due to them all sticking to first of all the codes and conventions but also following the same theme throughout. If you put them all next to each other you would be able to tell that they are all like a package. As you can see throughout all of this the colours all stay the same but then so do the images that are used and also the props. There is no confusion with any of it. This is so that everything will be recognisable to the audience so everytime they see something related to the film they will already know what film it is without even looking at the title. I personally think that that makers of the film and the audience both benefit from both of these combination of products as it first of all draws attention to the film and makes people want to go and see it which will then bring money to the producers but then it also benefits the audience as it is advertising the film in a variety of ways.
